History of the Apostolic Faith Church Memphis, Tennessee

The History of our Church

Established in Faith. Built by Prayer. Growing by Grace.

The vision of the Apostolic Faith Church Memphis, TN began in the heart of Bro. Solomon Akinduro. He had no friends nor relatives in the Memphis area but most of all, there was no Apostolic Faith Church close by where they could attend. Bro. Solomon only had business ties to the City of Memphis when the Lord began to speak to him concerning relocating. For several months, the Lord dealt with Bro. Solomon about permanently moving both his family and his business to Memphis. The Lord dealt compassionately with him initially, then God began to speak more vehemently through tests and trials, especially in matters concerning his business. After much prayer and many consecrations, Bro. Solomon had peace in his heart about moving to Memphis. He realized it was the perfect will of God for his life.

Bro. Solomon consulted with Bro. Mark Worthington, then pastor of the St. Louis Apostolic Faith Church, where Bro. Solomon and his family attended for over 20 years. Bro. Mark prayed with him and gave him words of wisdom concerning the move and in the second week of December 2012, the move from St. Louis, Missouri to Memphis, Tennessee was underway.

Bro. Solomon sold his custom-built home, packed his personal belongings, downsized his St. Louis business office, and began the journey to Memphis to start the mission the Lord had commissioned him to do. The Lord made it clear to Bro. Solomon that He wanted him to relocate to Memphis, Tennessee to start the Apostolic Faith Church work there. So, upon their arrival in Memphis, they invited neighbors, strangers, and business associates to join the Sunday meetings. The people who did attend had never heard of nor had any association with Apostolic Faith Church until their encounter with Bro. Solomon and Sis. Yemi. God, who knows all and is rich in mercy, kept Bro. Solomon encouraged to move forward in establishing a church. After several meetings in their home, they felt it was best to hold Sunday services in a public place. Thus, a search for a permanent place of worship began. The first Sunday service was conducted at Bro. Solomon's office at 5796 Shelby Oaks Drive, Memphis, Tennessee on the last Sunday of December 2012, which was attended by some family members from St. Louis.

The first public meeting was held at the Holiday Inn Bartlett, Tennessee, a suburb east of the City of Memphis. The room seated 8–10 people around a conference table but Bro. Solomon made sure meetings were carried out in the order and integrity of the Apostolic Faith Church. Bro. Solomon was the song leader, the preacher, and months later he was the Sunday School teacher for several years. The hotel conference room meetings did not prevent the blessings of the Lord from pouring out on the people of God and visitors. Souls were being blessed and saved. Ms. Stella Littlejohn was the first to have the salvation experience in the Apostolic Faith Memphis group. In June 2013, Sis. Deloris Oliver visited the meetings, and the Lord saved her soul in August of the same year. The Lord then put it on Bro. Solomon's heart to begin Wednesday night Bible Study meetings. The Holiday Inn conference room was not favorable for Wednesday night meetings. There was no guarantee the meeting room would be available every Wednesday and costs were not conducive for the two hours needed to conduct the service. As a result, church services were held in two different locations: The Holiday Inn for Sunday Service and Panera Bread, a restaurant in Cordova, TN, for Wednesday night Bible Study. Bro. Solomon, Sis. Yemi, and Sis. Deloris began faithfully attending Bible Study at the restaurant. Several months later, Sis. Willie Mae Stewart of Apostolic Faith Church Chicago was the first of several Apostolic Faith members to visit the Bible Study meeting at the restaurant. Sis. Deloris' daughter Whitney Wilkins (saved August 8, 2014) also began to regularly attend Bible Study and Sunday Services. A few others would come and go, and some visited on occasions. The church continued in the Lord for a couple years with just Bro. Solomon, Sis. Yemi, Sis. Deloris and Sis. Whitney as regular attendees. Sometimes discouragement would try to creep into the young Christians being few, but God in His infinite love and wisdom, His mercy and His grace encouraged them through sermons, Sunday School lessons, songs, prayer services and prayers of the saints. People of God from around the world were praying for the Memphis group. The late Bro. Albert Abe visited from Nigeria on a few occasions to encourage the group and spoke often with his longtime brother in the Lord Bro. Solomon, asking about the growing new Christians. The group was truly encouraged to keep forging ahead with the Lord, knowing that in due season they would have a permanent place of worship.

In December 2013, the group moved Sunday services from the Holiday Inn to Wingate Hotel on North Germantown Parkway but continued Bible Study meetings at Panera Bread. After the Wingate Hotel was sold, the new management asked us to move out. Not knowing where to go, we continued in prayer, very confident that the Lord would provide us a place before the following Sunday. In answer to prayer, the Lord provided us another place. After one Sunday service at the new place, we were told not to come back again because the lady that gave us the place was new and did not understand the management policy prohibiting religious organizations from using their conference rooms for religious purposes. So we left, hauling our church bag and digital music equipment without knowing where we would hold our next service. As usual, we prayed and the Lord directed Bro. Solomon to Baymont Hotel on Shelby Oaks, where he had previously gone to look for a place but was told they were not renting their conference room. In obedience to God, he went back a few months later. This time they rented the conference room to us for Sunday services and supplied coffee and pastry every Sunday until the day we moved to our permanent place of worship at 8326 Macon Road, Cordova, Tennessee, which was dedicated for service on December 12, 2019.

This gathering place had begun to look and feel more and more like a church. As the people of God were preparing to be blessed with a permanent place of worship, setting up every Sunday and taking the setup down at the end of morning service reminded us of the Children of Israel in the wilderness, who moved the Ark of the Covenant and set up a tabernacle in the wilderness every place they settled. Though the work was tedious, it was an honor and a privilege to be partakers in kingdom work.

In December 2014, Bro. Solomon moved Wednesday night Bible Study meetings from Panera Bread to his business office located at 5796 Shelby Oaks Drive, Memphis, TN. The location was favorable for round-table Bible Study meetings, New Year's Watchnight meals and services, and Friday night prayer meetings were held every other week at that time. They would also meet every Saturday at the office for Sunday School Conference and other meetings concerning and preparing for outreach. The group fellowshipped at the two locations for several years before relocating Sunday services yet again. Meetings were subsequently moved to the Baymont Inn in December 2015. The meeting room was located down a dimly lit hallway. Hotel staff members were accommodating to the church and its visitors. They provided fresh coffee and continental breakfast items every week. As we moved from hotel to hotel for services, we earnestly prayed that God would provide us our own permanent place of worship. Knowing that one day the Lord would provide them a permanent place of worship, the saints continued steadfast in the faith. It was a privilege to be in a place where they could worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. They continued inviting friends, family members, and associates to the Sunday and Wednesday services. The group had visitors from Apostolic Faith churches far and near including Nigeria, Chicago, Arkansas, Portland, and St. Louis. This was truly encouraging.

On February 28, 2019, Bro. Solomon found a house for sale that could be converted into business offices and a church sanctuary. The location of the building was an answer to Bro. Solomon's fervent prayer for the church to be located at an intersection. His vision was to conduct outreach right where they fellowshipped and draw a crowd on any given day. With much prayer and several months later, reconstruction of the building began. The seven-year lease at 5796 Shelby Oaks Drive business office was due to expire. With only a couple weeks remaining on the lease, Bro. Solomon drew up the design for the new building, acquired the initial permits, and hired men to assist with the reconstruction. The construction was delayed and unfortunately stalled for several months due to permit issues. To move the project forward in a timely manner, the Lord sent Bro. Solomon's longtime friend, a brother in the Lord (Bro. Mayokun Akinrotimi) from Nigeria to visit him at this time. Immediately after his arrival, he stepped in and construction of the church advanced forward. They worked tirelessly day and night moving furniture from the old office location and setting up furniture in the new location. Chairs were ordered for the sanctuary, walls were painted, pulpit and altar benches were made by Bro. Mark McCarville of the Arkansas church, and church dedication services were being planned. All the while, regular Sunday morning service and Bible Study continued each week.

The church and office building were ready for occupation. The church dedication happened on December 12, 2019. Setting up and taking the "tabernacle" every week had come to an end! Joy filled the hearts of the people and fellowship in the new building was a tremendous blessing to all.

Our profound appreciation goes to Brother Mark Worthington, my Pastor in St. Louis who has been my prayer partner and friend since he arrived in St. Louis with his wife, Sister Rosemary Worthington, for their prayers and support as well. When I told him where the Lord was leading, he prayed with me and gave us some Hymn books and a digital musical instrument that we are still using today.

We will ever be grateful to Brother Darrel Lee and Bob Downey for their support for the work here and for praying for us. We are very grateful to Brother Bob Downey, who sent Brother Joshua Idowu, our St. Louis Church pastor, as the officiating Minister for the dedication service. Our hearts will always be thankful to the delegations from our Oceanside Church, New York; Atlanta, Georgia; St. Louis, Missouri; and other places for their dedication to participate and witness the opening of Apostolic Faith Church in Memphis, for their financial support and prayers. We are also very grateful for those whose schedules did not allow them to attend but who prayed for us.

Finally, we are very grateful for Brother Mayokun Akinrotimi and his wife for their dedication to the work of the Lord by rolling up their sleeves and getting down to work upon their arrival in the United States until the project was completed. The Lord has been graciously blessing us immensely since the opening of our Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
